The Benefits of Using CBD Oil for Cancer

The Benefits of Using CBD Oil for Cancer Clinically CBD

CBD oil has a range of medical benefits, and one interesting area of research has been the effectiveness of CBD as a cancer treatment. While it hasn’t been suggested that CBD oil offers a cure for cancer, there are promising signs that it may be helpful in reducing tumour growth or slowing the spread of cancer. There is also some research that suggests CBD oil may be a complementary treatment for cancer, particularly when it comes to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to treat symptoms of anxiety.

How does CBD oil work?

CBD oil reacts with particular receptors in the human body. These receptors are protein-based chemicals structures that are attached to cells in the body. Cannabidiol (CBD) interacts closely with CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are part of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.

Unlike cannabis, or marijuana, CBD oil contains no THC, which is the chemical responsible for giving users a ‘high’. So, while CBD is still considered psychoactive, it doesn’t impair you or give you a feeling of euphoria.

CBD side effects

CBD is generally very safe for use, with very few side effects. In fact, most reported side effects relate to CBD and other medications having a negative interaction. Some side effects may include:

  •         decreased appetite
  •         diarrhea
  •         tiredness
  •         weight changes

If you’re taking medications such as antibiotics, blood thinners, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, muscle relaxers or going through chemotherapy, it is always suggested to speak to your doctor before trying CBD.

The benefits for cancer sufferers

The most interesting research around cannabinoids and cancer treatment support the idea that cannabinoids can reduce tumour growth in animal models of cancer. Perhaps equally interesting are the findings that CBD can actually enhance the uptake or increase the potency of certain cancer-treating drugs.

Studies in 2019 showed that cannabinoids can slow tumour growth, reduce the spread of tumours and even induce tumour cell death. Another study reported similar findings that CBD could induce tumour cell death while also making glioblastoma cells more susceptible to radiation therapy. No effect on healthy cells was reported.

In 2014, a study using experimental models of colon cancer found that CBD may slow the spread of colorectal cancer cells. Similarly, 2010 research showed that CBD significantly reduced the spread and proliferation of breast cancer cells.

In addition, CBD is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can be useful in managing pain associated with cancer treatment. CBD is also useful in treating symptoms of anxiety, a condition that is prevalent for many cancer sufferers.

Always consult a doctor first

While it is still too early to definitely say CBD is an effective cancer treatment, and it should certainly not be chosen above other verified treatments, the research indicated CBD can have a positive effect. However, due to its interaction with chemotherapy medications and its propensity to decrease appetite, it’s always worth consulting your doctor before using CBD.
